This bread doesn’t use yeast! Which is good because it’s not an ingredient we always have. This bread uses baking soda to rise the bread instead. Try out this recipe if you are new to baking bread, or if you just want a quick recipe to serve! This bread works great as an accompaniment for stews, chilis, soups and more!
Preheat the oven to 400˚F (200˚C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper, or aluminum foil.
In a large mixing bowl, add the flours, sugar, seeds, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
Mix together the buttermilk, egg, and oil in another bowl.
Mix into the flour mixture until a rough dough forms.
Turn out onto a floured surface and form into a small ball. It will expand a lot in the oven! Place on the baking sheet
Brush the top of the loaf with a bit of buttermilk, and scatter some more sesame seeds and poppy seeds on top. Using a sharp knife, gently cut a large “X” in the top of the loaf. This will help it bake evenly in the oven and help it to rise.
Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the loaf is golden.
Serve with soup, stew, with eggs, or however you would use bread!
